Val and I are preparing Hawkwind for a trip North. One of the items to handle was getting my old Honda outboard tuned up. This engine hasn’t been used in years and stored on the back rail of the boat. I took the motor to Pacific Boatland. After a couple days they called to tell me they got the engine running but won’t idle. They told me they’d need to take off the carburetor, clean it, perhaps rebuild it and also service and rebuild the water pump. The estimate was $1067.00 probably twice the motor’s value. I told them I didn’t want to proceed and would pick up the motor. I paid them $130.00 for the diagnostics. Bummed out I turned to Craigslist and found a retired Clack Co Sheriff that works on outboard motors
out of his garage. Truly a friendly and knowledgeable guy so I dropped off the motor. This was about noon. The carburetor was removed and cleaned. Lower unit dissembled, and inspected the impeller. Water pump cleaned and flushed of mud and debris the impeller was fine. Water line for cooling was clogged and cleaned. He calls me at 2:00 and tells me he’s finished and the charge would be $300.00 I could go on and on but this guy is a jewel!!
